Nantucket Workforce Housing Study
Free public presentation at the Nantucket Atheneum will share results of a six-month study on employer-supported housing and its impact on the island’s workforce and economy
NANTUCKET, MA — The findings of a six-month workforce housing study that examined how employer-supported housing affects Nantucket’s workforce, businesses and year-round community will be presented at a public forum hosted by Remain on Sept. 14. The presentation will be held Monday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. in the Great Hall at the Nantucket Atheneum, 1 India St, Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Conducted by the Boston-based consulting firm EBP US from January through June 2026, Remain’s study explored how the need for employers to provide housing support for their employees affects workforce wellbeing, community quality of life, cost of living and the cost of doing business on the island.
Researchers combined an analysis of public property and geographic data with a survey of 72 Nantucket businesses, stakeholder interviews, a review of existing research, and case studies of four other tourism-dependent communities facing similar housing pressures: Davos, Switzerland; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; the Isle of Skye, Scotland; and Key West, Florida.
“Employers’ urgent need to control housing in order to hire key team members or operate a successful business has resulted in a new normal that affects all of us,” said Cecil Barron Jensen, executive director of Remain. “We see it in the high cost of doing business, the increased charges for services and in the scarcity of attainable housing for community families. With this excellent report, Remain hopes to inspire others to be part of the conversation about solutions to address our long-term workforce housing needs.”
Jane Haines, senior consultant of EBP, will go through the study’s key findings, along with sharing lessons from comparable tourism-dependent communities, and explore how systems thinking can help Nantucket identify durable, long-term housing solutions.
The event is free and open to the public. The presentation will be from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Great Hall at the Nantucket Atheneum, 1 India St. Findings from the study will be available for download after the presentation.
